Cricket News, Mitchell Perry, Cricket Updates
Australia A fast bowler Mitchell Perry has been ruled out of his anticipated County Championship stint with Lancashire County Cricket Club after scans revealed a recurrence of a lumbar bone stress fracture.
Perry, who recently made headlines for his dramatic impact as an injury substitute in the Sheffield Shield final, underwent a routine MRI scan following the match. The scan detected the back injury, forcing him to withdraw from his planned move to England for the opening phase of the County Championship season.
Instead of joining Lancashire, the 24-year-old will now begin a rehabilitation program under the supervision of his state team, Victoria cricket team.
Lancashire have also confirmed they will be without Australian batter Marcus Harris for their opening fixture against Northampton, which begins Friday. Harris is unavailable due to his involvement in the Shield final, a five-day contest that concluded on Monday. However, he is expected to return in time for Lancashire’s next match against Derbyshire.
Lancashire’s director of cricket performance, Mark Chilton, expressed disappointment at Perry’s late withdrawal but wished the player a speedy recovery.
“We are naturally disappointed that Mitch will be unable to join us this season, particularly at such short notice ahead of the campaign,” Chilton said. “However, we wish him a full and speedy recovery.”
The club is now exploring potential replacement options as they prepare for the start of the new season.
Lancashire enter the campaign under the leadership of head coach Steven Croft, with veteran seamer James Anderson set to captain the side in the County Championship following a successful stint in the role last season.
Despite the setback, Chilton remains optimistic after a productive pre-season training camp at Desert Springs Cricket Ground, highlighting strong morale and competitiveness within the squad.
With preparations complete and confidence high, Lancashire now turn their focus to building on the momentum gained in the latter half of last season as they begin their County Championship campaign.
