England batter Harry Brook will sit out the month of April following a demanding winter schedule, as preparations begin for the national side’s home Test series against New Zealand national cricket team in June.
Brook, who featured in all 25 of England’s matches over the winter, will instead make two appearances for Yorkshire County Cricket Club in May. His scheduled matches come against Warwickshire County Cricket Club on May 8 and Surrey County Cricket Club on May 15, before rejoining the England squad.
Meanwhile, former England captain Joe Root is set for a more extended county stint, with three County Championship appearances lined up. Root will represent Yorkshire against Sussex County Cricket Club (April 24), Somerset County Cricket Club (May 1), and Surrey. The 33-year-old has not played competitively since England’s ODI tour of Sri Lanka in January and has opted for a short break before returning to action.
The new County Championship season began Friday with several England players already in action. Shoaib Bashir made his debut for Derbyshire County Cricket Club, while Zak Crawley and Matthew Potts featured for Kent and Durham respectively. Surrey fielded a strong lineup including Ollie Pope, Jamie Smith, and Matthew Fisher.
Pope, who lost his England No. 3 spot to Jacob Bethell during the Ashes, batted at No. 4 for Surrey, while Smith, England’s Test wicketkeeper, was dismissed for 9 after being promoted to No. 3. Ben Foakes is expected to take up wicketkeeping duties for the county side.
Several players remain unavailable due to injuries or rest. Ben Stokes (cheekbone) and Mark Wood (knee) are sidelined, while Gus Atkinson continues recovery from a hamstring issue. Others, including Ben Duckett and Josh Tongue, have been rested following a busy winter. Players such as Bethell, Jordan Cox, Will Jacks, and Brydon Carse are currently participating in the IPL in India.
England’s recent 4-1 Ashes defeat in Australia has intensified competition for places in the Test squad. With the national selector role vacant following Luke Wright’s departure, team management is placing greater emphasis on domestic performances.
Managing director Rob Key and head coach Brendon McCullum recently engaged with county officials ahead of the season, while captain Stokes has urged players to seize early opportunities.
“It’s a great opportunity for a lot of people around the country,” Stokes said. “The first six or seven weeks of Championship cricket will be very important, and players should use it to push their case for selection.”
However, concerns remain about limited county participation among England’s top players. Darren Lehmann, now head coach of Northamptonshire, criticised the lack of domestic appearances, suggesting players should feature more regularly in county cricket.
With the Test summer approaching, early-season performances are expected to play a crucial role in shaping England’s squad against New Zealand.
