Ruturaj Gaikwad, captain of Chennai Super Kings (CSK), has called on the team’s new generation of players to embrace the pressures of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and not fear making mistakes as they begin a new era without seasoned veterans.
Speaking ahead of CSK’s first home game of the 2026 season against Punjab Kings in Chennai, Gaikwad emphasized his focus on building a supportive and nurturing environment rather than imposing his authority on a relatively inexperienced squad.
Transition to a New Era
The 2026 season marks a significant transition for CSK, as it is their first without long-time stalwarts MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina. In their opening match, the franchise handed debuts to five players, including highly priced recruit Kartik Sharma.
Gaikwad acknowledged the challenges of leading a youthful team, noting that while enthusiasm is high, the gap between experienced and inexperienced players is evident.
“You have to allow them to make mistakes. You have to allow them to express themselves and ensure they are in a good headspace,” he said.
Handling Early Setbacks
CSK’s young lineup faced a tough start to the season, struggling in their opening match against Rajasthan Royals under challenging batting conditions in Guwahati. Despite the loss, Gaikwad remained unfazed, stressing that adapting to IPL pressure takes time.
He highlighted the multiple sources of pressure players face in the tournament—from family expectations to media scrutiny—and stressed the importance of helping newcomers adjust without becoming overly cautious.
“Making their debut for a franchise like CSK is a huge achievement. It’s about enjoying it, embracing it, and giving your best,” Gaikwad said, adding that early failures should not overshadow the long-term journey of young cricketers.
Adapting to Changing Conditions
Gaikwad also addressed concerns about pitch conditions at Chennai’s home ground, MA Chidambaram Stadium, which in recent years has not consistently favored spin bowling—traditionally CSK’s strength.
He pointed out that factors such as weather, dew, and moisture play a crucial role in determining pitch behavior, especially during night matches. With CSK set to play multiple home games, adaptability will be key.
“We have to adapt accordingly. Whatever the nature of the pitch, we will try to make use of it,” he said.
Focus on Growth and Fearlessness
Gaikwad concluded by reiterating his philosophy of encouraging young players to play fearlessly and focus on their strengths rather than worrying about immediate results.
With a fresh squad and a new leadership approach, CSK’s 2026 campaign signals a rebuilding phase—one centered on patience, growth, and long-term success.
