South Australia have been dealt a major blow ahead of the Sheffield Shield final, with fast bowler Brendan Doggett ruled out due to a hamstring injury.
Doggett, who played a निर्णायक role in last year’s final, has failed to recover in time for the clash against Victoria cricket team, set to begin on Thursday at the Junction Oval. South Australia are aiming to secure back-to-back titles after ending a decades-long drought with their triumph last season.
The right-arm quick was instrumental in that victory over Queensland cricket team, claiming 11 wickets and earning player-of-the-match honors at Karen Rolton Oval. However, he has not featured since sustaining the injury in February.
Head coach Ryan Harris confirmed that despite efforts to accelerate his recovery, the risk was too great. “He hasn’t come up—we tried as best we can,” Harris said. “Going into a final, you sometimes risk it, but this is probably too much, too fast.”
Harris also pointed to the long-term picture, noting that Doggett could be in contention for higher honors later in the year. “He has got potentially a big August coming up with the Australian stuff as well, so we want to make sure we’re not going to run him into the ground,” he added.
Wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey acknowledged the setback but remained optimistic about the team’s chances. “That’s what you play Sheffield Shield cricket to do, is to win titles,” Carey said. “We’re playing our best cricket at the right time of the year.”
To cover Doggett’s absence, South Australia have added pacer Wes Agar and batter Jake Fraser-McGurk—the latter returning after withdrawing from the Pakistan Super League.
Victoria, who finished atop the standings, will host the final and enter as favorites. However, South Australia remain confident as they look to defend their title and build on the momentum of last season’s historic win.
