The opening day of the Sheffield Shield Final at Junction Oval in Melbourne was washed out by persistent rain, but not before Victoria cricket team made a strong start against South Australia cricket team.

After winning the toss, Victoria’s pace attack exploited lively conditions to leave South Australia struggling at 55 for 3 in 28 overs by lunch. However, heavy and continuous rain shortly after the interval forced an early end to play for the day.

Veteran seamer Scott Boland, marking his 100th Sheffield Shield appearance, struck first in the seventh over. Despite an initially inconsistent line, Boland found his rhythm to dismiss Mackenzie Harvey with a well-directed delivery that seamed away to take the outside edge.

Fergus O’Neill soon added to the pressure, removing Henry Hunt with a fuller delivery that induced an edge, comfortably taken at second slip by Peter Handscomb.

Will Sutherland made an immediate impact after coming into the attack, trapping Jason Sangha lbw with a delivery that jagged back sharply. The decision left South Australia reeling at 21 for 3.

A recovery effort was then led by Nathan McSweeney and Alex Carey. McSweeney looked particularly assured, reaching an unbeaten 25 with a series of confident strokes, including consecutive boundaries off Boland. Carey, though less fluent, played a steady supporting role to guide the side to lunch without further loss.

Any hopes of building on that recovery were dashed as heavy rain began just as players prepared to resume for the second session. The downpour quickly rendered the outfield unplayable, with puddles forming across the ground. With no improvement in conditions, play was abandoned for the rest of the day.

Victoria will look to maintain their early advantage when play resumes, weather permitting.
