South Africa captain Laura Wolvaardt is aiming for a strong turnaround in the ODI series against New Zealand following a disappointing T20I campaign, stressing the importance of early points in the race for qualification for the 2029 Women’s ODI World Cup.
The visitors endured a tough T20I series, going down 4-1 to a New Zealand side led by Amelia Kerr. Reflecting on the setback, Wolvaardt said the team has regrouped and is focused on improving in the 50-over format, where South Africa have enjoyed greater consistency.
“We’ve had some good reflections and meetings. Obviously, we want to be a lot better in this ODI series,” Wolvaardt said ahead of the opening match in Christchurch. “It’s a format we’ve been consistent in over the last few months, so it’s about going back to what has worked for us, especially in global tournaments.”
South Africa have built a strong reputation in ODIs in recent years, reaching the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup and finishing runners-up in 2025, where they lost to India. They currently sit third in the ICC Women’s Championship standings, behind New Zealand and Sri Lanka, after a 2-1 home series win over Pakistan earlier this year.
Highlighting the stakes, Wolvaardt emphasized the significance of every match in the championship cycle. “The points are super important. We want to put ourselves in a position where we qualify early and don’t have to scramble later. Every game carries weight,” she said.
South Africa will rely on key performers such as Sune Luus, Annerie Dercksen, Tazmin Brits, Sinalo Jafta, and Nonkululeko Mlaba, all of whom featured prominently in the recent series win against Pakistan.
However, New Zealand enter the ODI series in strong form. After missing out on the knockout stages of the last World Cup, they have bounced back with dominant performances, including clean sweeps against Zimbabwe in both T20Is and ODIs, followed by their comprehensive T20I victory over South Africa.
Acknowledging the challenge, Wolvaardt noted New Zealand’s preparation and clarity. “They’re a very good side with clear plans, but we’re looking to be more proactive, braver, and make moves earlier to put them under pressure,” she said.
The last time the two sides met in a World Cup fixture, South Africa secured a convincing six-wicket win, chasing down a target of 231 with ease.
With a crucial three-match ODI series ahead, South Africa will be determined to bounce back strongly and strengthen their position in the World Cup qualification race.
