Alex Davies has stepped down as captain of Warwickshire County Cricket Club, with all-rounder Ed Barnard appointed as his successor across all formats ahead of the 2026 season.

Davies, 31, took over the leadership role at the start of the 2024 campaign and enjoyed immediate personal success, finishing as the leading run-scorer in the County Championship with 1,115 runs at an average of 50.68, including four centuries. Under his captaincy, Warwickshire secured mid-table finishes in Division One and performed strongly in the Vitality Blast group stages, topping the North Group twice, although they failed to progress beyond the quarter-finals on both occasions.

Announcing his decision, Davies described captaining the club as the “proudest” period of his career but explained that stepping down would allow him to focus fully on his performance with the bat and gloves.

“In order for us to win trophies, I believe I need to be firing on all cylinders,” Davies said. “That’s why I’ll be stepping down from captaincy duties ahead of the 2026 season.”

Barnard, 30, who joined Warwickshire from Worcestershire in 2023, has already been leading the club’s one-day side and served as Davies’ deputy in both the Championship and T20 formats. His elevation to full-time captain comes after an impressive 2025 season, where he scored a career-best 922 Championship runs and claimed 29 wickets. He was also named captain of the PCA Men’s Team of the Year.

Davies backed his successor, stating: “I couldn’t be passing the Bears on to a better person in Ed. It was clear to me when I made him vice-captain that he would one day be a great captain.”

Barnard expressed pride at taking on the role, acknowledging the legacy of past leaders at the club. “I’m very proud and honoured to captain Warwickshire,” he said. “I’ve really enjoyed working under Davo and hope to continue the progress the group has made.”

Head coach Ian Westwood praised Davies for his leadership and endorsed Barnard as a natural successor. “Barney is perfectly placed to take on the mantle,” Westwood said, highlighting his calm authority and respect within the dressing room.

With a growing squad and renewed leadership, Warwickshire will look to build on recent progress as they head into the 2026 season under Barnard’s captaincy.
