Fergus O’Neill delivered a standout all-round performance to put Victoria in a commanding position against South Australia in the Sheffield Shield final at Junction Oval, as a controversial substitute decision added further intrigue to the contest.
Victoria seized control late on day three after a dramatic moment involving Sam Elliott, who was forced off the field due to left hamstring tightness just one ball into South Australia’s second innings. Under Cricket Australia’s trial substitute rule, Mitchell Perry was brought in as his replacement—and made an immediate impact.
Perry struck with his very first delivery, trapping South Australia captain Nathan McSweeney lbw, leaving the visitors struggling at 35 for 3 and still trailing Victoria’s first-innings total.
Earlier, O’Neill anchored Victoria’s innings with an unbeaten 64—his fourth first-class half-century—guiding the hosts to 261 and securing a vital 63-run lead.
