Cricket News, Green’s Unbeaten, Cricket Updates
A magnificent unbeaten century from Maddy Green and a decisive five-wicket haul by Rosemary Mair powered New Zealand women’s cricket team to a series-clinching victory over South Africa women’s cricket team in the ODI decider.
Coming into the match after splitting the first two games, New Zealand produced a clinical all-round performance to secure a memorable comeback series win.
Green, Halliday Rescue New Zealand from Early Collapse
New Zealand’s innings got off to a disastrous start, slumping to 3 for 3 inside four overs after early strikes from Tumi Sekhukhune and Ayanda Hlubi removed Suzie Bates, Georgia Plimmer, and Amelia Kerr cheaply.
From that precarious position, Green and Brooke Halliday orchestrated a remarkable recovery. The pair stitched together a match-defining 211-run partnership for the fourth wicket, taking New Zealand to a commanding total.
Green anchored the innings with a composed and authoritative 141 not out, registering her third ODI century, while Halliday fell just short of a hundred, scoring 98 off 124 deliveries. Their partnership lasted until the 40th over and completely shifted momentum in New Zealand’s favour.
Late contributions from Izzy Sharp and Nensi Patel helped push the total to an imposing 306, setting South Africa a target of 307 to win the series.
South Africa Start Strong but Falter in Chase
South Africa began their chase confidently, with Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits adding 68 for the opening wicket. Wolvaardt then combined with Annerie Dercksen to take the score to 148 for 3 after 27.1 overs, keeping the chase well within reach.
However, the innings lost momentum following the dismissals of key batters, and South Africa struggled to build a substantial partnership thereafter. Chloe Tryon offered brief resistance with a quick 29, but lacked support from the other end.
Mair Leads Bowling Charge
Mair proved to be the difference-maker with the ball, delivering a match-winning spell of 5 for 50. She struck at crucial intervals, removing Brits early before going on to dismiss Dercksen, Anneke Bosch, Tryon, and Hlubi.
Her consistent breakthroughs derailed South Africa’s chase, eventually bowling them out 66 runs short of the target.
Series Turnaround for New Zealand
The victory marked an impressive turnaround for New Zealand, who had narrowly lost the opening match before leveling the series thanks to Kerr’s unbeaten 179 in the second ODI. Green, who had also impressed with 85 in the first game, capped off the series with a standout performance in the decider.
With contributions from both bat and ball, New Zealand sealed a hard-fought series win, showcasing resilience and depth in a high-pressure encounter.
