Australia’s newly appointed captain Sophie Molineux has earned high praise for her leadership during the team’s recent T20I series sweep against West Indies Women, despite being unable to contribute fully due to injury.
Molineux, who recently took over the captaincy from Alyssa Healy across all formats, is currently managing a back injury that has restricted her bowling and limited her batting opportunities. The Caribbean tour marked her first overseas assignment as skipper and served as a key preparatory phase ahead of the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in June.
Although she did not bowl during the series and had just one brief appearance with the bat, Molineux’s influence as a leader stood out. Head coach Shelley Nitschke commended her impact, highlighting her presence as crucial both on and off the field.
“She’s been amazing, on and off the field,” Nitschke said. “It’s been incredibly valuable for the group to have her here leading, especially as we build towards a World Cup. While she hasn’t been able to bowl, her leadership and contribution with the bat in the final match were important.”
In that final T20I in St Vincent, Molineux produced a quickfire 25 off just 12 balls, including two sixes, helping Australia push their total beyond 200. The innings complemented a superb century from Georgia Voll, putting the visitors in a dominant position before rain sealed victory via the DLS method.
Reflecting on her performance and the team’s progress, Molineux emphasized a renewed focus on consistency and decisiveness.
“It’s been a big focus for us—winning key moments and getting back to being ruthless,” she said. “We’ve improved each game with both bat and in the field. There’s still plenty to learn, but this series has been a great step forward.”
Australia will now shift focus to the ODI series against West Indies, beginning Friday in St Kitts, where Molineux will aim to continue building momentum and further establish her leadership ahead of the global tournament.
