Former Australia fast bowler Ryan Harris has thrown his support behind Nathan McAndrew, stating that the South Australia all-rounder deserves a place in the national Test side following his outstanding domestic performances.
McAndrew recently delivered a match-winning display to guide South Australia cricket team to back-to-back Sheffield Shield titles, earning Player of the Match honors in the final against Victoria cricket team.
Dominant All-Round Performance
The 31-year-old showcased his all-round ability in the final. He scored 17 and a crucial 60 runs in the second innings, forming a vital 105-run partnership with Alex Carey after South Australia had slumped to seven wickets down with a narrow lead.
With the ball, McAndrew was equally impactful. He claimed key wickets across both innings, including Victoria’s top performers Peter Handscomb and Sam Harper, as well as promising youngster Ollie Peake. His final match figures helped bowl Victoria out for 139 while chasing 196.
Harris: “He Should Have Already Played Tests”
Harris believes McAndrew’s consistent domestic record warrants national selection.
“I think he probably should have already done it [played Test cricket] by now,” Harris said. “He’s been one of the leading wicket-takers for years and contributes valuable runs as well.”
However, Harris acknowledged the challenge of breaking into a strong Australian pace attack.
Tough Competition for Spots
McAndrew himself remains realistic about his chances, citing the presence of Australia’s established fast-bowling unit, including Scott Boland and other frontline quicks.
“No matter how well I bowl, I’m not taking any of their spots,” McAndrew said. “Injuries would have to happen for me to get an opportunity.”
Despite not yet earning a Test cap, McAndrew has featured in Australia A fixtures and a Prime Minister’s XI match, keeping him on the selectors’ radar.
Late Bloomer with Impressive Record
McAndrew’s rise has been unconventional. He made his Sheffield Shield debut at 28 after years in Sydney grade cricket and a brief stint with Auckland. Since moving to South Australia in 2021, he has become one of the competition’s most reliable performers.
In just 42 matches, he has taken 181 wickets at an average of 23.52, including 11 five-wicket hauls and one ten-wicket match haul—numbers that rival the best in the competition.
Respect from Opponents
Even opposition players have praised his consistency. Victoria captain Will Sutherland described McAndrew as “relentless” and highly accurate, making him one of the toughest bowlers to face in domestic cricket.
With Australia facing a packed schedule of 20 Tests over the next 18 months, opportunities could arise. If they do, McAndrew’s form and persistence may finally earn him a long-awaited Test debut.
