A disciplined bowling performance led by Will Sutherland put Victoria in a strong position, but a late fightback from South Australia ensured the Sheffield Shield final remains finely poised at Junction Oval.

At stumps on day two, Victoria were 110 for 4, trailing South Australia’s first-innings total of 198 by 88 runs. Marcus Harris (26*) and Ollie Peake (16*) will resume on day three, while Nathan McAndrew has been the standout bowler for South Australia so far with figures of 2 for 37.

Victoria Bowlers Dominate Early

Resuming in bowler-friendly conditions after a rain-hit opening day, Victoria’s attack made full use of the assistance on offer. Sutherland led the charge with 4 for 54, while Fergus O’Neill and Scott Boland shared five wickets between them to dismiss South Australia for 198.

Despite the collapse, Nathan McSweeney produced a composed 52, anchoring the innings under pressure. His knock, alongside Liam Scott’s valuable 37, helped South Australia recover from a precarious position and post a competitive total.

McSweeney showed strong technique and patience against high-quality seam bowling, leaving well outside off stump and capitalising on anything overpitched. However, his resistance ended when Boland induced an edge after a lengthy stay at the crease.

Late Fightback from South Australia

South Australia’s hopes were reignited late in the day thanks to McAndrew, who struck twice in quick succession. He removed Sam Harper and Peter Handscomb, reducing Victoria to 48 for 3.

The pressure continued when Henry Thornton dismissed Campbell Kellaway for a well-compiled 29, leaving Victoria at 83 for 4.

Victoria were fortunate not to lose another wicket soon after, when Henry Hunt dropped a straightforward chance at gully, allowing Peake a crucial reprieve. Harris and Peake then steadied the innings through a testing final hour before bad light halted play.

Match Finely Balanced

With no batting bonus points secured, South Australia must win outright to claim the Sheffield Shield. Despite that, McAndrew remained optimistic, suggesting the match is still evenly balanced.

Sutherland, meanwhile, emphasised the importance of the first session on day three, noting that the relatively new ball is still offering movement and could play a decisive role.

With three days remaining and conditions still favouring the bowlers, the final is shaping up for a result, with both teams firmly in contention.
